According to other sources about Matthias Schumacher, he was born about 1802 to Peter Schumacher and Maria Elizabeth Schmitz or Schmitt (maiden name) in Nachtsheim, Rhineland, Germany. Matthias grew and became a farmer in the Nachtsheim area.
On November 15, 1828 Matthias married Maria Schmitt (she died in 1831 or 1832). Matthias and Maria had 2 children, Anna Maria and Peter. Anna Maria stayed in Germany and Peter came to the USA with his father. Peter was born on December 10, 1831.
On May 24, 1833 Matthias married Anna Maria Schumacher (not related but with the same surname). Matthias and Anna Marie had 8 children, and 3 died very young. The living children were: Johann (born 10/2/1835), Nicolas (born 7/13/1837), Stephan (born 7/25/1839), Anton (born 11/15/1841), and Michael (Gerhard's father/ born 6/6/1847).
According to "Schumacher Family History" sheets prepared by Sr. Michelle Schumacher, Matthias immigrated to America in 1852 from Nachtsheim, Rhineland, Germany (near Koblenz or Coblenz). Per Sr. Valencia Schumacher (Michael's daughter/ Gerhard's sister), Michael Schumacher was about 5 years old when they left Germany, this would have made the immigration year 1852.
Matthias and his 2nd wife Anna Maria first settled in the McHenry, IL area. Peter Schumacher (the eldest son from Matthias's first marriage) went to the St. Michael, MN area first and settled on the future Schumacher home place (see 1876 photo). The rest of the family came in 1856 and Peter turned the land over to his father. Peter then moved onto some other land.
