In the early 20th Century it was quite common that photographs were made into postcards according to Pearl Yates Olstad (Gerhard's niece by marriage). This photo was one such example. According to John Schumacher (Gerhard's son), this photo was likely taken on Gerhard's homestead before he built the family home in 1920 and it was also likely taken before Gerhard was married in 1919. The man in the photo standing next to the car (likely a Model T Ford) was Gerhard, or one of his maternal 1st cousins (Dehmer family), or perhaps another unidentified man.
